Health Benefits of Chocolate
Like kratom, chocolate comes from a tropical tree. It’s made by roasting the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, which is native to South America. The cacao seeds are fermented, dried, and roasted. A part of the seed called the nib is then ground into a cocoa mass, liquefied, and processed into cocoa solids and cocoa butter.
To make chocolate in the form, most of us are used to, the cocoa solids and cocoa butter are combined with various quantities of sweeteners and oils. Ingredients like milk powder are also added to create milk chocolate.
Although many chocolate foods contain high excess sugar and saturated fats, some forms of chocolate may have health benefits. The pure cocoa in chocolate contains bioactive phenolic compounds. These compounds act as antioxidants and may confer benefits such as:
- Lowering cholesterol
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease
- Improving cognitive function
- Boosting athletic performance
- Reducing the risk of stroke
However, it’s important to note that these potential benefits are linked to the nutrients in pure cocoa. Many chocolate foods do not contain a high enough percentage of cocoa to outweigh the impact of high sugars, fats, or other ingredients.
When choosing chocolate for health benefits, experts recommend sticking to dark chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the richer the antioxidants.
Combining Chocolate and Kratom
We often receive questions from people about adding kratom to other foods. One common question is: can you combine kratom and chocolate? We’re happy to report that the answer is a delicious, resounding yes. Kratom and chocolate complement one another very well.
That said, we always recommend taking precautions with kratom use. When enjoying kratom and chocolate together, we suggest sticking to green vein kratom and red vein kratom. These two kratom strains produce reported benefits that can enhance the pleasantness of indulging in your favorite chocolate:
- Green Vein Kratom: Emotional balance, sociability, and a steady sense of well-being
- Red Vein Kratom: Feeling grounded, quieting noisy thoughts, unwinding at night
Although white vein kratom is an excellent choice for many purposes, it has a higher mitragynine alkaloid profile. Many users say that white vein kratom helps them feel more alert and motivated, similar to the effects of caffeine. Because chocolate also contains caffeine, mixing white vein kratom with chocolate may be too much for sensitive individuals.
If you’re making kratom chocolate, remember to enjoy kratom responsibly. Always use the lowest dose of kratom to start. Don’t increase your dose until you understand how your body responds. Don’t mix kratom chocolate with alcohol. Keep all kratom products out of reach of children and pets.
Additionally, we strongly advise all kratom chocolatiers to label your confections. If you’re making a big batch or you just have leftovers, write down the following information on your storage containers:
- The kratom strain used
- The amount used
- The date you prepared the recipe
For the recipes below, we recommend using raw kratom powder because it’s easier to measure and more versatile. If you are preparing kratom chocolate bars or other recipes using kratom extract, be mindful that the extract may be much stronger than you’re used to.
DIY Kratom Chocolate Bar Recipe
Homemade chocolate bars are a great way to have fun and get creative in the kitchen. The recipe below is for a simple chocolate bar “base,” which you can customize with nuts, caramels, dried fruit, or other ingredients. (Note: You will need a chocolate bar mold or candy mold for this recipe.)
Ingredients
- Raw kratom powder
- 1 cup cacao butter
- ⅔ cup raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp. maple syrup or coconut sugar
- 1 pinch sea salt
Directions
Chop or grate the cacao butter into smaller pieces to make it easier to melt. Next, place the pieces in a small saucepan.
In a larger saucepan, boil water and then reduce to a gentle boil. Hold the smaller pan with the cacao butter over the boiling water. Stir until the cacao butter has melted.
Remove the cacao butter from heat and add the cacao powder, kratom powder, and sweetener. Stir until everything is combined into a smooth mixture.
Pour the chocolate mixture into your molds and allow it to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. As the chocolate begins to cool and set, sprinkle it with sea salt and add optional toppings. Once the chocolate has cooled, leave in the refrigerator until the bars or candies have fully hardened.
Store chocolate in a ziploc bag or airtight container for up to three months.
